DESCRIPTION:Once again it’s time for the glorious biennial meet up with John Mark Harrison and Brendan Taaffe from the US with me and Jennie Fisk from UK. This year the event runs for 5 glorious days of singing\, laughing and community in the hills near the little town of Biggar in the South of Scotland from the 19th to 24th August 2026. \nThe venue is Wiston Lodge – originally a Victorian Hunting Lodge. It’s a great venue\, with a wooden hut added onto the main house\, which is ideal for singing. However\, there are no single ensuite rooms and very limited single rooms so if that kind of privacy is important to you we suggest you get a nearby BnB or camp. Tents\, caravans and camper vans are all welcome and there are showers for campers in the on-site Education Suite. \nDue to the high level of interest in this event we have tweaked our booking process from previous years. This means that instead of giving us a first and second choice for the room that you want\, you will be able to book the room that you’d like directly below. If you’ve missed out on the room that you’d like you can let us know in the comment section within your booking for a different room\, but there is no guarantee one will become available. Alternatively you can join the waiting list and we will be in touch if there is an opening. \nWe currently are not offering tickets for individual days this year but this may change in the future. \n\nTo book:\n1) Select the room that you would like below then\, fill out the required booking information. Most bookings are for one person\, aside from twin rooms\, which are a booking for two people who know each other. \n2) On the payment page please click to pay by ‘Direct Bank Transfer’ and take a note of the account details \n3) Click place order and then make the payment of a £100 deposit per person to the bank details that you took a note of. \n  \nIf you are buying a ticket internationally\, please feel free to opt to pay ‘via paypal’ on the payment page – or email us (admin@aliburns.co.uk) to receive details of another account that can accept your payment. \nIf you forget to take a note of the payment details feel free to email us for them. \nWe will invoice you for the balance of your place around three months before the event. \n\nPrice per person:\n\nSingle Room – £900 per person\nSingle rooms are largely based in the cabins. They have shared bathrooms. \n  \nTwin Room – £775 per person\nTwo of the twin rooms have single beds and one has a double bed and a single bed. All are ideal for couples or friends to share. If you book into a twin room you must know who you are going to share with and book together within one booking. \n  \nShared Room with Ensuite – £750 per person\nThe Main House has three of these rooms\, one of which is accessible. They will be shared with 3 or 4 people. These rooms are for women only. Please email us if you have any questions about this. \n\nMen’s Dorm – £675 per person\nWomen’s Dorm – £675 per person\nThe shared dorms have 4 or 5 bunk beds – we only use the bottom bunks – and a nearby toilet. \n  \nCamping – £600 per person\nAvailable for tents\, camper vans and caravans. Please note there is no power hook-up available. There are showers available in the Education Suite. \n\nNon-residential – £525 per person\nStay in the village or nearby Abbington\, Leadhills or Biggar. \n  \n\nNB: The deposit is £100 for all places  \n\nRefunds\nIf you cancel before 1st June 2026 we’ll refund your ticket (minus a £20 admin and bank charge fee). If you cancel between 1st June and 1st August we’ll refund your ticket minus the deposit price (£120) unless we can fill your place in which case we’re happy to refund your fees (minus a £20 admin and bank charge fee). If you have to cancel in August you’ll loose 100% of your fee unless we can fill your place. We recommend that you take out travel insurance. \n\n\n  \nOther Information\nBrendan and John are also doing a ‘Singing the Chapels’ weekend workshop on Sat 15thAug in Norfolk and nearby on 16th Aug in Suffolk. DESCRIPTION:The EarthSpirit Centre near Glastonbury in Somerset is one of my favourite UK venues.  The hall is beautiful for singing\, there’s a good range of accommodation to suit everyone\, it’s accessible\, the food is great and the staff are lovely!  So come along and join Anna Tabbush\, Jenni Fisk and myself from the 12th to 16th April for a big blast of harmony singing to blow away the winter cobwebs. The event will begin on Sunday evening at 6pm and finish at 3pm on Thursday. \nAll prices include meals\, tuition and our own private access to the hot tub and sauna. \n  \nBooking and Cancellations:\nTo book your place\, please pay a deposit of £100 below\,  £15 of which is non returnable. Jess\, who’s on admin for this event\, will then contact you with bank details of where to pay the full amount\, which is due by the 1st February 2026. Full refunds (minus the £15 non refundable admin fee) are available until 1st February 2026. If you cancel between the 1st Feb and the 7th March 2026 I’ll refund 50% of the total fee and after the 7th March 2026 there are no refunds unless I can fill your place from the waiting list – if so\, I’m happy to give you a full refund (minus the £15 non returnable fee).

Lea’s song’s have taken the UK community singing world by storm since her first workshop tour in 2023 after taking part in the Natural Voice Network’s Black Lives Matter Commissioning project with her stunning song Lifting As We Climb. This is you chance to really immerse yourself in her beautiful\, soulful work. You can read more about her here. \nHelen Lyle co-leads Sheffield’s big community choir Purple Cats and brings a light touch and a wealth of teaching and performing experience to the team. If you are staying at Wiston Lodge\, your room will be confirmed when we send out invoices for the final balance\, normally around 3 months before the event. DESCRIPTION:With John Mark Harrison US\, Brendan Taaffe US and Ali Burns \nThere are a very few places left on this Residential Weeknd – mainly in shared rooms and dorms or camping. For info regarding prices and availability please email hello@jessicaboatright.uk \nAn intensive weekend of singing with Ali Burns (Scotland)\, Brendan Taaffe (USA) and John Harrison (USA).The tutors will bring new compositions each showcasing their own particular style. Friday’s workshop will begin at 5pm with a gentle introduction to the songs. After dinner we’ll have a short sing\, leaving time for socialising and getting to know each other. Saturday will have around 6 hours of workshop followed by dinner and more social time. On Sunday we’ll have time to work on all the songs again before closing the weekend at 4pm. \nThe event is open to anyone with a passion for harmony singing. Whether you sing in a choir or down the pub\, if you’re not a complete beginner to holding a harmony\, you are welcome. Songs will be taught at a pace that suits aural learners but written music will be available too. \nBrendan Taaffe and John Harrison from the US are both well loved and respected contemporary Shape Note composers\, steeped in the tradition but reinventing it for today’s singers. Between them they have a vast knowledge and love of the many traditions that make Americana. Ali Burns is one of the UKs leading songwriters for the community choir sector and brings her own folky style to a contemporary world.
