Hymn to the Sun and Moon

Tony Bonning wrote the beautiful words for this song which was originally part of The Raven song cycle. I’m a huge admirer of his writing – elegantly simple but with strong imagery. The song is a favourite with community choirs. It’s quite crunchy and dissonant with all 4 parts – for a simpler version I teach it with soprano, alto and  either the tenor or the bass.

Example of lyrics

Verse 1
To you, heart of fire, corn of the field
To you, pearl of the night, frost on the web
To you, heart of fire, fruit of the tree
To you, pearl of night, silver on the wing
