Raise the Cup of Kindness

I wrote this thinking about all the friends I see only once a year at events or workshops. I’ve always loved the line Robert Burns uses in Auld Lang Syne, “We’ll tak a cup of kindness yet for auld lang syne”, and based this song on it. I teach it in English and in Scots.

Some friends from a singing group in Ullapool have written a lovely second verse for it, transforming it to a great performance song – especially for Burns night!

Example of lyrics

Oh let’s raise the cup of kindness and toast another year
To friendships new and friendship old and to friends no longer here
And as we raise our glasses and drink this moment in
I’ll keep it in my memory until we meet again.

Oh let’s raise the cup o kindness and toast anither year
Tae freenship new an freenship auld an tae freens nae langer here
An as we raise oor glasses and drink this moment in
I’ll aywis keep it in my mind until we sing anither year
